January 23 is National Handwriting Day.
“The purpose of National Handwriting Day is to alert the public to the importance of handwriting. According to WIMA, National Handwriting Day is a chance for all of us to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting.” Writers Instruments Manufacturers Association.
The fact that there is an actual day designated for handwriting makes me want to do a happy dance. Seriously. It is worthy of a jig.
Any reason to encourage people to put aside the gadget and put pencil to paper is a good thing in my books. I thought I might make it fun and easy for you to celebrate with me.
6 things to try on National Handwriting Day:
1.Doodle till you drop.
2.Get the kids to collect autographs from all the adults they meet in their day. See who wins the prize for the messiest signature!
3.Put a handwritten note in the lunch boxes. Even the big people get one.
4.If you are having a meal out, write a thank you to your server on the back of the receipt.
5.Start keeping a journal near the bed so you can write down all the things that keep you awake at night.Let the page deal with it while you sleep.
6.See if your mom has kept any of your childhood school artwork or assignments, and enjoy looking at your printing as a kid. How you’ve grown up!
What will you do?

I never have trouble writing by hand. But I still love ideas or prompts for ways to use handwriting (is that supposed to be two words or one word???). Today, so far, I’ve written one postcard, taken notes from a gardening show on TV about having a weed-free garden and made a list of people to whom I’d like to send birthday cards. There will be much more hand writing in my day. Maybe even a card or letter heading your way 🙂 Thank you for your lovely, inspirational posts!

Sounds like you had a day full of handwriting (I think one word rules) 🙂 I would love, love to receive a card from you. I promise to write you back.

I had no idea there was a National Handwriting Day! As much as I enjoy technology, I still love using pen and paper to send real notes. I was reading a blog the other day about how their family had gone totally paperless with different tech apps and such and I just don’t think I could do that. I love that I can pull out old recipes still written in my mom’s or grandmother’s handwriting and I plan to do the same for my kids. Thanks for bringing attention to this. Stopping by from SITS Saturday sharefest. Have a great weekend!

Hello there Patty, I am fairly new to National Handwriting Day too, but I just love it. The whole concept of putting pen to paper, to send ‘real’ notes, as you say, is so special in our digital age. Funny that you should mention recipes as I too have some written by my grammie and I just love remembering her each time I use her recipe with her scribbles….and stains all over the page! Thanks for stopping in for a visit.
