How are you feeling about this whole ‘back-to-school’ season?
I posed this question to a few random teenagers who happened to be hanging out in my house the other day and here are the words they used;
Elated. Sad. Excited. Stupid. Stressed. Nervous.
Pretty insightful and honest I thought. And it got me thinking, aside from the justifiable stationery buying binge opportunity, the back-to-school experience can be an emotional time. Most profoundly I think, it speaks to the passing of time.

How to deal with the back-to-school blues:
1) Take lots of photos …not just the obligatory first day pic, but maybe the friday of the first week with their impressions jotted down.
2) Write a note to the your kiddo’s teacher thanking them for all the prep they have done already for a fantastic year.
3) Allow lots, I mean oodles of time, the first day so that stress doesn’t show up to the first day party.
4) Remember your own school days, your favorite teacher, embarrassing moments. Perhaps some fodder for some funny stories to share.
5) Go out and treat yourself to some back-to-school supplies just for you. Sharing not required.
6) Instead of the lunch box note (although that’s pretty fun too) why not leave a note on their pillow to find when their first day of school is complete.
7) And if they are older, don’t bombard them with a slew of questions about their day.In fact, just have a great snack waiting and wait for them to talk.If you’re lucky, this will happen around 11:30pm.
Do you love back-to-school or do you dread it?
P.S. Some of my favorite school day memories involve cootie catchers and pink pearl erasers.
