original Calgary Stampede postcards
I’m probably the only person in Calgary that doesn’t own either a Cowboy hat or a pair of cowboy boots. And, if I’m smart, I will keep that tidbit under wraps, as my city is in full stampede mode. The Calgary Stampede is on right now until July 17th.
Over 100 years old
It was happenstance that I stopped in at A Vintage Affair, a local vintage shop, earlier this month and stumbled upon an original booklet of postcards from the very first Stampede in 1912. It is a treasure trove, this charming shop, and I will surely be back.
I had no idea that the very first Stampede was held in the month of September. Have a look at this short video for more history of the Calgary Stampede.
Women competing in rodeo events from day one
One of my favorite things about these postcards are the women who competed in the saddlebronc, steer roping and trick riding events right from day one.
Miss La Due, Champion Lady Fancy Roper of the World, and Miss Lucille Mulhall, Steer Roping World’s Champion, in their long skirts are modern day heroes. Yahoo!
So many things to explore at the Calgary Stampede
I am headed to the Stampede grounds later this week (I do plan on wearing a plaid shirt and jeans)to take in the sights and sounds and maybe even sample some of the crazy amazing culinary creations.
I’m looking forward to exploring Weadickville where the streetscape turns into Calgary 100 years ago, not unlike what we see in these original Calgary Stampede postcards. I’ve even heard there is a replica post office. Follow along on my Instagram where I will post photos from my visit.
Would you like one of these postcards?
Send me your address (ritewhileucan@gmail.com) and I would be delighted to mail you one.
