The world has been turned upside down in 2020 and our Christmas will be very different this year.
Extended families will not be together and there are no holiday parties. We can’t attend church in person to celebrate Christmas and there will be no counting down New Year’s Eve with friends. But guess what?
The magic of Christmas trumps the pandemic and there are, what I’m calling ‘Covid Gifts’, everywhere if you look hard enough. Here are a few of mine:
Look hard, you will find some Covid gifts
- My immediate family is home together thanks to Covid. With four adults and one teenager busy working or studying things aren’t always tinsel and garland but we are together and that’s what matters.
- Time is a Covid gift. Time to do things (or not) like make perogies for the first time or write more letters.
- Slowing down. Albeit a ‘forced’ slow down this has been good for me.
- Creativity. We’ve had to do things differently. I’m pretty sure the word of 2020 should be ‘pivot.’ Never would I have imagined hosting online virtual letter writing socials.
- The little things. Like rounding the corner in a park to find someone has decorated the trees with ornaments.
Thank you for being here with me this year. As this will be my last post for 2020, I want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and may you discover the gifts of Covid.

Being aware of the gifts is easy some days, harder other days. But there are. A lot of little things become big.
Your blog is among those little (or big) gifts. Thanks for keeping it.
Barb
Thank you so much Eva! You are so kind to say. Hang in there and we will all get through. Hugs.
Lisa
Yes, love this Barb! There is always something to be grateful for; some days we just have to look a little harder than others.
Because we can’t go to church like we normally would, our family of five attends online…snuggled on the couch under blankets, always with a plate of sausage to munch on😁 It will be one of my favourite memories of all time.
Barb
Thanks Lisa. I completely agree, even if it’s the teeny, tiniest thing. I feel like your plate of sausage is right up there though, with the best things to be grateful for! 😉 Yes, church looks so different these days, but that is such a great memory for sure.
Elinor Florence
Our greatest Covid gift was having our daughter and her family leave Calgary and move to our town of Invermere permanently, where they are working from home. We are so happy to have our two grandchildren within walking distance! Merry Christmas to you, Barb!
Barb
This is such a beautiful Covid gift, Elinor! The ability to work from home anywhere is certainly something that Covid has made more possible for so many. Merry Christmas to the entire family!
