A Birthday party of pens and fonts.
Throw yourself a party! That’s what Hannah did. She just turned eleven years old and to celebrate she was inspired by fonts and pens. No matter the number we are turning, I think Hannah hit upon a crazy fun idea to celebrate a Birthday.
Hannah is a sweetie and not just because she shares my passion for all things handwritten. That’s just who she is. Hannah is my youngest blog reader and there’s no better person to hold that very special spot in my blogging world.
Calligraphy party.
Hannah emails me from time to time, which I adore, and I owe her a little handwritten goodness myself in the mail. In the meantime, I want to share how Hannah, with her super clever mom, celebrated her Birthday with the most creative party ever…paper garland included.
First off, find yourself someone who knows calligraphy (check etsy.com for local artisans in your area, check if there is a calligraphy guild in your city or contact a local high school art teacher for suggestions).
A good pen is a must.
It was Claudia Chan (stay tuned for more on a creative partnership between ritewhileucan and Claudia in a future blog post) who taught Hannah and six of her friends the basics of calligraphy.
As you can see, other supplies included clip boards for each friend, ruled paper with a template for the alphabet, blank paper, a white board for demos of types of calligraphy and ideas to practice. Keep things simple so not to overwhelm those not familiar with wielding ball point pen or tombow brush pens.
Simple, easy and beautiful.
The name place cards, flowers, and paper garland are in keeping with a style and design of simple beauty. Love all of it. Hannah’s mom, a photographer, (who took all these beautiful photos) says this party was super easy.
The girls sat at the table working magic with their pens for over an hour and then scurried outside to play. They loved being able to keep the pens, paper supplies and go home with their very own calligraphy creation. Super easy.
Thanks Hannah for sharing your party with us. Keep on with your love of fonts and handwriting…who knows where it might lead.
Has anyone ever attended a calligraphy workshop before?
Melanie
I have not but I would LOVE to. What a great idea. On a related note. I’m going to the Colorado Pen Show in a couple of weeks and one of the exhibitors is Michael Sull. Here’s what Wikipedia says about him: Michael Sull is an IAMPETH master penman and author living in Mission, Kansas, United States. An expert on penmanship, he was Ronald Reagan’s calligrapher after his Presidency and is known worldwide for his skill and teaching ability. Wikipedia.
I got to take a class from him last year. He’s a very sweet man and accomplished penman.

Ohh, I’m green with envy Melanie. Do come back and let us know how your experience at the Pen Show is. Thanks for introducing me to Michael Sull too. There are some very cool UTube videos showcasing his beautiful work.
