Ink – Written by Hand (#INKdoc)
There is so much truth in this seven minute short (film) by Ryan Couldrey | @RyTron.
Truth about how handwriting is being lost to a whole generation. Truth that in our digital world we have an inner desire, whether we know it or not, to seek out how things were done before; to rediscover the tangible pleasure of writing by hand.
It is mesmerizing to watch how the film captures the elegance and humor, of not only artist and photographer Tanja Tiziana, but of the fountain pen and ink scratch across the page.
I have never used a fountain pen, but after watching this I am completely inspired to get dirty with some ink of my own.
How about you, have you ever used a fountain pen?
Amy
The writing she does in the film is done with a dip pen. Fountain pens won’t give you as much of a dramatic difference between up strokes and down strokes. There is more info in this blog post – http://www.jetpens.com/blog/guide-to-fountain-pen-nibs-choosing-a-fountain-pen-nib/pt/760
If you are looking to buy your first fountain pen, here is another post that may help – http://www.jetpens.com/blog/guide-to-choosing-a-fountain-pen/pt/368 I have a half dozen fountain pens and if I was recommending one for someone to try out first, I’d recommend the Lamy Safari. It works really well for me.
p. s. I don’t work for Jet Pens, I just love them 🙂

Oh, Amy, it’s like you’ve given us an early Christmas gift with this most helpful information! Thank you so much. Can’t wait to explore these sites and the Lamy Safari. Again, thank you for stopping in and sharing your experience with pen and ink.
Amy
You’re welcome. Thank you for your inspiring blog 🙂 Happy pen shopping!

xoxxo Amy.

GREAT POINT! Handwriting helps us ‘pause & reflect.’ I love to hand write letters (though sloppy…he he), but that is just what I do. I gives me moments to think on the ‘person’ and the point I want to make that is special about them!
I used to ALWAYS use a fountain pen…they are awesome. Now I need to go out and buy one!!! 🙂
Barb
I didn’t know you always use a fountain pen. Very cool. I’m seriously going to get myself one and have fun experimenting…not sure it will be legible though. 🙂

I learned to write cursive with a fountain pen. We were taught the Palmer Method at my first school. Those pens had an ink chamber that you filled, so you were not dipping the pen.
I changed schools after 4th grade. There, I had to try to re-learn cursive skills in the Zaner Bloser method and used a special ball point pen. Ball point ink became the requirement and the fountain pens and ink dried and were discarded. And I got terrible grades in penmanship!
Fountain pens were still given as gifts for special occasions and little plastic ink refills were used in those “modern” pens.
I’ve watched the revival of fountain pens and occasionally encounter someone who uses one in their daily life.
This was a lovely video, thank you for posting it!
Your ‘vintage’ reader, Elaine 🙂
Barb
Elaine, I so excited to learn all this from you. Merits further research on my part about these two different methods to learn cursive. I have a feeling your penmanship is pretty sweet. So glad you enjoyed this video, I thoroughly enjoyed it too. I love my ‘vintage’ readers… 🙂

This was an interesting short film. I have used a fountain pen before but haven’t found a good one yet.
Barb
Yes, I’ve heard that the pen makes all the difference. I’m going to look into the Muji pens referred to in the film. Let me know what you find too.
