Happy Birthday!
The Fairmont Palliser Hotel in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada is celebrating its 100 year anniversary of having opened the doors in 1914.
I wonder what it would have been like to live 100 years ago? Certainly, mailing a postcard while on vacation, like the one above would have been common place.
In fact The Palliser had, and still operates, an internal post box where guests can drop letters into the mail chute from any floor of the hotel and it will end up in the central mail box on the lobby level of the hotel.
History Alley
Last week I attended a professional conference (see my About Page for my day job) and it was held at this fabulous hotel. You can’t imagine my delight when I saw this beautiful vintage mail box while waiting for the elevator.
Of course, I had to find out more. Smile. The staff were beyond gracious in sharing some of the history of the hotel AND also sent me images of the postcard shown here.
In fact, I can’t wait to visit The Palliser again as it has launched an amnesty program called History Alley to collect hotel memorabilia and any hotel objects that might have been “borrowed” (no questions asked) that will be displayed in a public exhibit.
Dancing in the streets
Should you be visiting Calgary this summer, or if it is your home town, there are a vast array of activities all year long to celebrate the 100th year anniversary that you should definitely check out.
And, with Father’s Day this weekend, why not get Dad to put on his dancing shoes and attend The Afternoon Tea Dance?!
Mail a postcard
I don’t know about you, but when I’m on vacation I still hunt down a postcard and mail it or sometimes I keep it as a souvenir.
If you visit The Palliser you even have the option to send an e-postcard.
How about you, do you send postcards while on vacation?
