Mailbox on a beach
Summer is so close I can taste it. This mailbox on a beach is incredible. Just randomly waiting for passersby as they stroll in the warm sand. No house it belongs to, no owner to claim it. When a dear friend told me about this mailbox I was enchanted.
A blank paper and pencil await
This beach is part of Emerald Isle, North Carolina and requires a boat to get to. Although not an official mailbox, in the sense that a mail carrier doesn’t actually pick up the mail, but rather a pencil and blank paper are found within, inviting people to write whatever is on their heart.
treasures of the sea
Such treasures these letters. Some were drawings, verses, notes, no two alike. A snapshot in time in handwriting like no other. Clearly those who pass by this mailbox on the beach are charmed by its very presence too, as there were many letters inside… plus a beautiful seashell.
Mysterious mailbox
I’ve been wondering about the origins of this mailbox. Who decided to put it there? And what prompted them to place a mailbox of all things? I love how the mailbox itself is decorated, but I am curious about the footprints. I suppose these unknowns are part of the mystery of the mailbox of Emerald Isle.
“…but a letter is better.”
Sadly, I won’t be going to North Carolina any time soon, but the next time I am on a beach I will no doubt wish for a magical mailbox like this.
How about you, have you ever found a randomly placed mailbox in an unexpected place?
Elaine
What a fun story! I love thinking about the person who put it there. I think it would be like putting a message in a bottle to add a note of encouragement.

Glad you enjoyed the story Elaine, I’m dying to go there and see it for myself….and of course, leave a letter. p.s. great idea about message in the bottle.
