Mailbox in the strangest place
Got your flip flops on? Better yet, bare feet. No fancy footwear required to reach this mailbox. A friend snapped these photos for me (thank you Shannon) while on Bird Island, North Carolina.
Kindred Spirit mailbox is a bit of an icon in the area. Since it was first placed in a sand dune over 35 years ago, hundreds of people have written in the journals that are always in the mailbox.
The mailbox that invites you to write a letter
It seems that this random, unexpected mailbox beckons people to pause and write a note. They write letters to lost friends or a poem of hopes and dreams for the future. These notes fill journals upon journals.
The mailbox has a romantic beginning. Frank Nesmith and his girlfriend at the time, had this idea to have a mailbox appear out of nowhere in the sand. Due to weather and changing tides the location of the mailbox has moved from the original spot.
North Carolina is beach mailbox friendly
There must be something about the shores of North Carolina that are welcoming to mailboxes as the Kindred Spirit isn’t the only one. There is another mailbox on Emerald Isle as well.
If you are planning your summer vacation in the area, maybe you should visit the Kindred Spirit mailbox.
Where is the strangest place you’ve ever seen a mailbox?

I love this, Barb! I’ve seen (and written in) public journals in metal boxes while hiking in the mountains, but this is even better! Nice!

Hi Ramona, Isn’t this lavender farm just stunning?! I too have written in public journals while hiking in the mountains (we must compare notes), but this idea of those at the farm putting postage on the postcard was incredible. p.s. did you read my post from last week about mailbox in middle of sand dune? I will be putting your name in the draw. Thanks for stopping in for a visit.
