The elusive card
So let me ask you, do you have a teenager? I have two. Girls. Need I say more? Now, don’t get me wrong, I love them to bits but often ‘Mom’ is not the favorite person in the lives of teenage daughters. And I get this. I remember.
Some times it is hard to find just the right card for someone. Mother’s Day can be one of those occasions. Keep reading for some suggestions on how to make this easy.
Anyway, this card above, by Sea and Lake from Toronto, Ontario, Canada is perfect for my girls to give to me. That’s right, I just found my own Mother’s day card. Ha!
Now, this little gem of a card by Rifle Paper Company, might be what my 8 year old son would pick for me. The bright colours and the fact that it is in all capital letters would get his attention.
And if I were to buy myself a Mother’s Day card, this one by Blackbird Letter Press would surely be it. I can’t even tell you how much I love it.
But if truth be told, as my Mom always used to tell my younger self, “the best card is a card made by you.” Ahh, so sweet. I love my mom.
6 tips on how to select just the perfect card for your Mom:
1.) Know your Mom. Is she a style maven or perhaps she loves flowers? Find a card that when you first look at it, it says your Mom all over it.
2.) Lets face it, many cards out there are just dripping in sappiness. You know what I mean. Almost so much so that it comes off as insincere. This is why I look for blank cards. This way I can write what I want.
3.) Employ the kiddies to draw a picture for Grandma. A sure winner.
4.) Have everyone in the family sign their own signature. I opt for this even if it means getting the card off late. Seeing the handwriting is part of the charm of receiving a card I think. Use a hand print or scribbles from the tiniest members of the family.
5.) If your Mom is no longer with you take a moment and journal your words of gratitude to her. Let her know you miss her. Buy a single stemmed flower and put it in your room. Keep her memory alive.
6.) Once you’ve sent the card off in the mail, run to your calendar and mark on the 11th of every month, a note to yourself to call your mom.

I love to have the kids draw cards for special occasions. The last one my youngest 2 sons did together was fabulous. I should have taken a picture!

A good thing to do is to honor a departed mother is a blog post on an appropriate day! I honor my dad, who was a veteran, this way on Memorial Day! My mom is still with us! YAY!
