I love the concept of a post script. I can remember distinct occasions after a conversation at the office or with a friend were I came away remembering that one additional point I wanted to make but had forgotten to do so. And this after thought may not have even occurred to me in the meeting. Most times it happened while walking down the stair well or once back seated at my desk. Maybe even the next day. I call it the ‘percolation’ factor. I need the time to let things swirl a bit, get mixed up with the other stuff happening in my brain, and let it blend.
Jay Conrad Levinson, an author, who wrote the popular 1984 book “Guerrilla Marketing” shared that when people receive personal, and even printed letters, they read the salutation first and the P.S. next. Mr. Levinson goes further to say “Therefore your P.S. should include your most attractive benefit, your invitation to action, or anything that inspires a feeling of urgency. There is an art to writing a P.S. I recommend that your personal letters—not your email—include a handwritten P.S. message, because it proves beyond a doubt that you have created a one-of-a-kind letter that wasn’t sent to thousands of people. In our age of technology, personal touches stand tall.” (Jay Conrad Levinson, Guerrilla Marketing: Easy and Inexpensive Strategies for Making Big Profits From Your Small Business rev.ed. Houghton Mifflin, 2007).
So, here is what “the blend” in my swirling brain came up with: that our HELLO and our GOODBYE are what people notice or remember from our conversations. And our letters. Why not apply the “written afterwards” P.S., as it translates from Latin, into our conversation and our letters. Make our goodbye count. Or after we walk out of that door, why not walk back in, and add our post script?
P.S. OK, I am off to let some “percolation” happen….until next time….thanks for reading.
