Pencils are like candy … so many to choose from
There, I said it…back-to-school. I held off for as long as possible, truly I did. I hate rushing summer away. In fact, much to my horror, I noticed a neighbor has put out the potted plants commonly referred to as ‘fall mums.’ Ugh.
The flip side to this onslaught of Fall before I’m out of my flip flops, is that I love the back-to-school ritual of shopping for supplies. Today, I wanted to share the most amazing pencil store ever. It reminds me of a candy store. So many colours and types of pencils to choose from, all beautifully displayed in jar canisters, it’s like trying to decide between sweedish berries or starburst.
Writing instruments of days past still have a place today
CW pencils is a place where pencils are the main attraction. Born to Caroline Weaver, this dream shop calls New York home and has been attracting much attention since March of this year.
Now, you might wonder at the audacity of someone who decides to open up a store that sells primarily pencils (along with all the accessories including note books, erasers, sharpeners, pencil cases etc) in this digital age.
But, after chatting with Caroline, it didn’t take long for her enthusiasm for these writing instruments of school days gone past, to enlighten me on how the response to the shop, and the pencils, has been overwhelmingly positive.
Something nostalgic about a pencil
Caroline describes herself as growing up in a ‘pencil house’ where her mother was a bit of a ‘pencil snob’ and when they traveled as a family, they would seek out pencils from that area and bring them back home.
Of course, people that are a tad bit skeptical come into the shop just because they can’t believe there is a store that sells solely pencils. But once inside, it seems the pencils work their magic.
People become nostalgic and share their stories about how their grandmother used to have that pencil or stories about sharpening pencils while in grade school.
There does exist the perfect pencil
I had no idea there were so many different brands of pencils, some with hard or soft led, eraser tips or not. Depending on the task you want to use your pencil for, the pencil ladies can assist and recommend like no other, and suggest what pencil works best for a crossword puzzle in a newspaper for example.
Of course, as I’ve shared before, I always make a point of going back-to-school shopping for myself (any excuse to buy stationery related items, and I’ll take it) and so this year I decided to buy some pencils and erasers from Caroline’s shop.
Soon, a delightful yellow envelope showed up in my mail box with all my treasures, including the Goddess Pencil (just had to have it for the name alone) and these adorable mini L&C Hardtmuth erasers.
