Postcards in real time
Most of us have sent or received a postcard, but we probably haven’t made it a quest to snap a photo of the postcard in real time. By ‘real time’ I mean, sleuth out the exact spot on the postcard, go there physically with postcard in hand, and take a photo of both.
Stephanie of PostcardsToMom on Instagram does just that. I was completely captivated by her photos and the concept. I am guessing you will be too.
Capturing the scene
I asked Stephanie what led her to capture her travel adventures in such a creative way. She shared that she has always loved mail, sending postcards regularly to both her grandmother and Mom and in 2015 she made a New Year’s resolution to send her Mom a postcard every week (note to self; this would be a great Mother’s Day idea).
While on a business trip to Paris, she spontaneously decided to take some fun pictures of postcards in their natural habitat. In fact, it was while eating breakfast by the Arc du Triumph that she realized it was exactly the same view as on the postcard she had just picked up. Thus was born PostCardsToMom.
Postcards made new again
There is so much I love about what Stephanie does, but I especially appreciate how she has taken something, like postcards, that have been around since forever and added a modern, creative, funky twist, making postcards fresh and exciting again.
Stephanie doesn’t limit herself to only posting postcards in real time, she shares whatever captures her fancy but her photos always connect in some way to the place she is in and are beautiful.
Send a postcard
Do you have the travel bug now, after looking at Stephanie’s photos? I know I do. Perhaps you will be inspired to grab a postcard and send it to a friend this week, after all it is National Letter Writing Month or maybe as you think ahead to summer vacations you might try to capture your postcard in real time too.
What place did you last send a postcard from?
Ramona
Wow, what an awesome idea! I’m inspired. Although mine might be postcards of a roadside attraction, like the world’s largest golf ball or something–haha!
Barb
I loved this idea too, Ramona. I think anything could work, largest golf ball included! 😉
Stephanie
Barb! Thanks for featuring me on this post! Postcards of anything are fun and it’s just more fun to be part of the community and share!
Barb
My complete pleasure Stephanie! I love what you are doing with postcards. Happy travels to you. I look forward to keeping in touch.

I love this idea. I’m so nostalgic and love to see “then” and “now” pictures. There’s a professional photographer in Colorado who decided to replicate photos in Colorado that were taken 100 years ago. He wanted to stand as much as possible in the exact spot to take the more recent picture. Crazy, amazing feat if you ask me. He’s published this work in two volumes. They’re quite spectacular. I’m going to consider the postcards in real time mission.
Barb
Such a great idea, adding the historical perspective to postcards in real time! No doubt they would be fascinating. Can’t wait to hear where your mission of ‘real time’ postcards takes you.
Eva
This is a great idea. Maybe I’ll try to do the same (maybe in my city?).
A friend of mine took some wonderful pictures like this (well, he’s a professional photographer!), but using coins that show landmarks or buildings.
Barb
I was thinking the same thing, Eva. So cool to hear about the coin version. Such creative ideas.
Tessa
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Barb
Me too! Me too. 🙂 So glad you do too Tessa.
