“You will be fierce. You will fearless. And you will make work you know in your heart is not as good as you want it to be.” Ira Glass
Not the ordinary
When I listened to this short video clip, by Ira Glass, I was completely captivated by the literal words dancing across the screen.
I loved how the words themselves didn’t follow the ordinary left to right pattern of writing and reading. The timing and placement of words as they appear across the screen was mesmerizing. Did you notice how some times the font was large or in cursive or, when emphasis was required, you heard the clickity-clack of a typewriter? Love this!
Working through the mud.
I am not a writer. Fact is I am really mucking about here in unknown territory. Perhaps you find yourself also exploring something new, unknown, a bit intimating or daunting. Perhaps you haven’t picked up a pen to write anyone or anything in years.
Here are the gems that have stuck with me from Mr.Glass’s clip:
1) Don’t give up (just as this bold hand lettered quote done by Sean McCabe suggests).
2) You have killer taste.
3) Do something creative.
4) Find your special thing.
5) Give yourself a deadline.
6) Pump out the volume of work. Repeat.
Killer taste.
Many people look at me as if I am a one-eyed cyclops when I say I blog. And then, when they hear my topic, they add a few fangs, a looming spaceship and nod politely.
I try to explain this new found habit by comparing it to a hobby. I love letter writing, stationery, but even more than that I love to create – this is a relatively new realization for myself. And this little corner of the blogosphere allows me to do just that. So glad you have found me and have hung around long enough to know I don’t really travel by spaceship.
What about you? Will you pick up a pen this week and jot a note to your friend who you have been meaning to get in touch with?
p.s. remember you have killer taste so make it happen.

Love, love, love it! Such encouragement. Just what we need as we muddle through what matters re: our work and what doesn’t. Thanks so much for sharing that video!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. The message is so profound. It’s like he put into words something I was feeling without even realising I was feeling it. I found this really inspirational.

Hello there Lizzy, I too found this video inspiring. I had never thought of the creative process in quite this way. So glad you stopped by and found it. Hope to see you again soon. Happy creating!
