I read recently that September is the new January. I like that.
I have always felt September is a time for a new start. Those blank pages in the new school binders. The sharpened pencils just ready to write something profound. The pencil crayons in pristine condition. There is excitement in the air.
Something about this Katie Evans illustration captured my eye. Maybe it’s because it brings back memories.
Do you remember the hush of the library? And then there was the strategic plotting of where to sit. Close enough to that crush so you could be on receiving end of a note being passed* along the library cubicles, but not too close to make it obvious that they were your crush. This illustration just confirms my theory that many a romance has been kindled in the ‘stacks.’
No denying that with it September brings a change of season. In my part of the world the leaves begin to change colour and fall to the ground, the air becomes refreshingly cool and crisp and I begin to pull out my sweaters and leather boots. I just love this illustration of this wee gal with her scarf and messenger bag. I wonder what kind of notes she carries.
*So before ‘texting’ there was note passing. The crumpled up, slightly grimy, piece of paper that sailed either through the air or traveled via an assembly line of hands before reaching you. Of course, the trick was not to get caught by the teacher. No doubt a sure fire way to stop the note passing was to have your note read aloud in class. SOB. AWKWARD. HORROR of all horrors.
Sound familiar? Did you ever get caught passing a note in class? Was it worth it?
P.S. Here are some tried and true ways to pass a note in class and NOT get caught. Go old-school this year and pass an actual hard copy note….I dare ya!

I love the illustrations in this post, and I agree, there’s something about September that signals a beginning, organization, change–and cords.
I do remember passing notes, although leaving one in a boy’s locker was more my M.O. Of course they usually had check boxes for responses, too! “Do you like me? Yes ____ No____”
Barb
Wow, you are fast at completely your mission! Love the check mark box options on your notes. I forgot about that. And the drop in the locker as you walk discreetly past and hope no-one saw you! Such fun. Thanks for stopping in.

I remember note passing days and the fun ways we used to fold them. I also wanted to let you know that I nominated you for the Liebster Blog Award (my husband alluded that it was a bit like a chain letter and I thought you might appreciate that thought 🙂 I really do enjoy your blog!
Barb
Jean, you are so sweet to nominate me! I feel all giddy with excitement, but more, silly happy at the thought you like my blog that much. Many thanks. And, yes, folding spitballs was serious business wasn’t it. Had to make sure they fit in the pen tube. Thanks for sharing your fond memories of your note passing days.
