A tattoo was never in the plan. In fact, to be honest, I might have had a negative view of inked skin in the past. Fast forward to my recent milestone birthday and I found myself wanting to mark the occasion… see what I did there?
Milestone Birthday
So, here’s the thing. One doesn’t turn 50 every day. For a couple of years now I’ve been thinking about the whole tattoo idea. I did my research and landed on a incredibly talented, slightly scary looking dude at Mission Tattoo.
Be sure about your choice of image
The final image I chose was a typewriter but the close ‘runners-up’ were my favorite verse address (Ephesians 3:20,21) or an image of mountains. I also really liked these miniature tattoos of letter writing related images
Did it hurt?
Did it hurt? This is the most frequent question I get asked. I would say that it is like dental work; tolerable but not pleasant. About halfway through I did ask Fraser – the talented guy in the orange baseball cap- how much longer until he was finished. I was getting thirsty and starting to sweat.
Embrace your age
Keeping in mind that total time was maybe 15 minutes. Not sure what that says about my stamina but I was glad it wasn’t longer. My lovely friend Michelle came with me and graciously volunteered to have hers done first. So, at least this way, I could know what to expect. Thank you Michelle!
I love my typewriter tattoo! No regrets. Aging is a gift and I intend to celebrate and be grateful every moment.
This is so great! One time when I was away on a business trip my husband surprised me by getting a tattoo of me on his arm – wowsa! I haven’t taken the plunge yet but I’m inspired by your action and thinking it might happen sometime in the next 1/2 decade!

Good for you, Barb. It looks great. But, I think that the next time I turn 50, I’ll treat myself to a cruise to mark the occasion. Can you imagine what my crew would say if I got a tattoo? Come to think of it, it might be fun to shock them!!!
