Vintage Canada Day
It was 77 years ago that Canada, via the Governor General of the day, received one of the largest letters ever written on a typewriter. Isn’t this just amazing? I wonder where this letter is today. It certainly speaks to the wonderful country I am so privileged to call my home.
Letters typed on the giant typewriter measured 9 by 12 feet
The Giant Underwood Master Typewriter was part of the exhibit in the Business Systems Building at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair. The giant typewriter operated daily and was quite a draw with the crowds.
The typewriter weighed 14 tons and took three years to build. Incredible. Never mind the letter, I wonder where this giant typewriter is today?
“To you and your people. Whose future is universally envied.”
Next year is the 150th Birthday of Canada. A little vintage for our Canada Day reminds us that there is much to celebrate and as the exciting milestone approaches in 2017, we should not forget that our ‘future is still envied’ by those who live in countries that do not have the freedoms we do here.
Celebrate with red and white
Perhaps we will gather with friends and family this weekend, or like in the photo above, join in festivities offered in our cities and towns to mark July 1st as our proud Birthday as a country.
I am sure wherever we decide to spend the holiday, there will be lots of red and white Canadian flags waving, maybe some fireworks, and if we are lucky we might find a moment to think about what that maple leaf means to us.
How will you celebrate Canada Day? What traditions do you keep on July 1st? Are strawberries involved?
P.S. Check back here on the blog on Saturday July 2nd for a fantastic Canada Day giveaway. You won’t want to miss it!
