Words on a wall
I was at a restaurant this week that not only had excellent food but exceptional handwriting.
As I sat across from this amazing handwritten wall at NOtaBLE restaurant it got me thinking about the words on the wall. The big bold words in colour and the scribbles, doodles, and scrawling script; all of the them kept me company throughout my meal.
I just simply loved looking at the handwriting on this wall.
Marked by doodles
If you have kids, or have seen kids in action, it seems inevitable that at some point they grab the crayons or markers and start redecorating your home. Of course, we freak, try to find some cleaning product that will remove all signs of creativity and shove some paper on the table.
So, here’s the thing, why not encourage this writing on the wall? Of course this is easy for me to say since my kids are well past the toddler, crayon toting stage. But what if we were to slap some chalkboard paint on the wall or, in a moment of downright boldness, designate a certain section of wall for marker doodles?
Five ideas to foster writing on the wall
1. If you are daring and own a Sharpie™ try this cool concept out on your favorite wall.
2. Apply chalk board paint to a cupboard door or wall in the kitchen to keep the kiddies content while you cook up a storm.
3. Create your own paper, like the one I picked up recently from Anthropologie (shown above), and framing it is another approach to having writing on your wall.
4. How about hanging a brightly coloured piece of fabric, I’m thinking orange, and have guests add their signature when they visit. A new twist on a guest book.
5. Perhaps you will be inspired by the work of artist Annie Vought, and her paper cut out letters suspended by pins. How beautiful is that?!
Any writing on your walls? What would you write if you dared?

I love words on walls! I am not sure I am brave enough to incorporate a whole wall into the writing decor idea but I am thinking of adding words in frames and ten attach to walls. I hope it would work!

Great idea about writing in small sections on the wall and then framing. This would look stunning Yana. thanks for sharing. Talk soon, I hope.
Carla
I love this idea. I am not bold enough yet to dedicate an entire wall, but I did buy a big chalkboard I leave in the kitchen for inspirational messages.
Barb
I bet that chalkboard is well used in your kitchen Carla. That is a great idea! I appreciate you coming over for a looksee.

Our town has a chalkboard wall down the side of a restaurant downtown. Each month they pose a different prompt and people add to it throughout the month. I’ve never stopped to write on it, but I drive past it once in a while to see what’s there.
Barb
Ok, this has to be one of the best, most creative ideas I have heard. I also love that you drive by to see what it says. If ever you are blessed with some extra time, I would just die to have a picture of that wall. 🙂 So nice to chat with you here.

I love Annie Voigt’s artistry–I might have to try that at home (if I don’t go crazy cutting out all those paper words!). In the last two homes I’ve lived in, I’ve created chalkboard walls for my kids. They’ve loved them! Great article–visiting from SITS!
Tiffany
I love the painting on the wall! Thanks for sharing this with us at #ClickChicks don’t forget to come by and LinkUp this week with the prompt GREEN 😀

Good evening Tiffany, Wasn’t that wall grand?! I had a great view of it all through my meal. I tried hard not to be distracted by it and focus on my lunch partner. oops. 🙂 Thanks for stopping in.

That was the reason behind the chalkboard wall in my kids’ room! I wanted to keep them off of all the other walls in the house and they love it!
Btw I love the paper cut words piece! stunning.
Barb
Happy Monday to you Julie, thanks for visiting ritewhileucan. I’ve always wanted a chalkboard wall in my house, but one in the kids’ room, now that is a fantastic idea. Love that you love those paper cut words as much as I do!
Raquel
My mom let my kids write on a glass door in her home when they were young. The drawings are still there, although my kids are much older now. It is fun to see it now. I am not sure I would do that in my house…maybe someday.

Writing on a glass door! This is an awesome idea Raquel. All mothers are genius’s aren’t they! 🙂 Thanks for sharing this with us and stopping in for a visit.

I actually do have LOTS of writing on my walls, though it is in the form of vinyl appliques or just framed sayings. I am a total word junkie (blogger – hello!) so I can rarely pass up a magnet or a picture with a great saying on it. But I hate my handwriting, so I don’t think I’d ever do the sharpie wallpaper or anything. Although yesterday, I did see a staircase that had the words of a poem done in vinyl letters on the kickplate of each stairstep. That was pretty cool, but it wouldn’t work with the way our staircase is set up. #SITSSharefest

Hey fellow ‘word junkie’ so lovely of you to stop in for a visit. Love that idea of letters on the stairs kickplate and your vinyl appliques sound very cool too. P.S. I bet your handwriting is charming in its own right. 🙂

My 3 year old LOVES to draw with me! I have two big framed dry erase boards that she goes to town on!! We rent our house right now but I can’t wait to have a big chalkboard wall for her someday!
Barb
I love this idea of using dry erase boards Eva Marie, so smart and easy! Thanks for stopping in for a visit.

What a great idea…my kids will love this. Stopping over from SITS
Barb
Hello Kimberly, Lovely to read that your kids will love this idea. I mean what kid wouldn’t want to write on a wall?! Thanks for taking the time to visit and share your comment.

Oddly enough, when my daughter was in that phase, she didn’t color on the walls, but she did take a (thankfully washable!) marker to the couch. If we weren’t living in an apartment, I would love to use chalkboard paint in the kitchen and even in her room. She’s a super creative kid and loves to color and draw. Right now she’s totally into her Wreck This Journal.
Stopping by from SITS. 🙂
Barb
Thanks Susie for your visit. I think you lucked out with that marker being washable! giggle. Your daughter sound so creative and I wish her well at ‘wrecking’ her journal.
