Movies and mail. Two very different modes of communicating, yet when brought together, have resulted in some classic viewing options.
If you are a movie buff then no doubt this title brought to mind a particular film starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks that came out in 1998. But, what I didn’t realize, until recently, was that 58 years earlier a film called “The shop around the corner” starring Margaret Sullivan and JamesStewart was an earlier adaptation of the same story. Both of these films were actually based on the play called “Parfumerie” by Miklós Lászoló.
“Il Postino” is an Italian film released in 1994 that tells the story about a Chilean poet who forms a friendship with a postman who comes to love poetry. I remember watching this one several years ago and it was only at the end that I realized it was based on a true story. I should watch it again as that fact alone adds a completely different perspective.
Perhaps you have seen “Junk Mail?” This 1997 Norwegian film won many awards including one from the Cannes Film Festival. How can you not want to watch something billed as a “black comedy about cold canned spagetti!”
There are actually several films where mail itself factors as a main character. Here is a list you might enjoy:
1. Mail Order Bride
2. The Postman
3. Lost in Austen
4. Mail Chief
What have I missed? Leave a comment so I can update the list.
